OVERTURE

Our university offers consistent career and employment support from early in the first and second years until the job-hunting period in the third and fourth years. We support students to understand the meaning of work and to make concrete preparations and actions to build a career that suits them. We introduce a student who stepped up over four years and has secured a tentative job offer from NTT DATA Corporation, a systems integrator.

He decided to study information engineering because he felt it would make society more interesting

I always liked arithmetic and mathematics from the early years of elementary school, so I thought I would go into science, but even when I became a high school student, I still didn't have a clear vision of what I wanted to do in the future. When I was about to decide on my career path, I was chatting with a friend about how it would be fun if I could pay with my smartphone, since it's a pain to take money out of my wallet every time. Soon after, I found out that smartphone payments were already in practical use, and I was very surprised. At the time, I was still unfamiliar with the IT field. From there, I became more interested in information engineering, which I thought could make the future society more interesting, and I went on to study at Department of Integrated information technology College of Science and Engineering.
In the "Career Design Seminar" taught by Professor Seiko Ogawa, which I took soon after entering the university, guest speakers included people active at the forefront of various fields, such as the president of a well-known fast food restaurant. This class was meaningful in improving my skills for entering society, and I believe it had a major impact on my job hunting.

The "Welcome Lectures" in which several teachers spoke about their own areas of expertise were also interesting, and several of these were given by Professor Hara Susumu. As a fan of ekiden even before enrolling, I will never forget hearing from him the fascinating story of how he built an unshakably strong team from scratch as a coach. The content of the lectures also encouraged student growth, which motivated me. The talks by the other teachers were also very varied, covering topics such as the natural environment and how to make magic squares, making these classes ideal for students who want to broaden their knowledge.

Department of Integrated information technology offering practical learning

In my specialized subjects, I have been exposed to a variety of programming languages. There are a lot of languages that we deal with at our university, and I feel that I have developed a solid foundation of programming skills. In "Information Comprehensive Programming Practice II," we were paired up to create a web application, and we started by thinking about what to create, and then enjoyed the output-focused work of making it happen.
The laboratory of Professor Gozo Ohara, to which I belong, deals with a wide range of machine learning themes, mainly researching text mining, deep learning, and their application systems such as recommendation systems. While there is a high degree of freedom, novelty is also required, so I chose emotional marketing as my research topic. Emotional marketing is the idea of evoking empathy and leading to purchases. I thought that if we could change the style of product reviews to match the attributes of site viewers, such as their age, we could create something interesting, and I am currently working hard on research to make this idea a reality.

The key to job hunting is action
I got a job offer thanks to the support of many people.

Being a student of an information science department, I was interested in the IT field, and since I was taught a lot by a senior in my club who is currently working at an IT company, I narrowed down my job hunting to the IT industry from the beginning. I actively did various things, but I especially focused on visiting alumni. I was able to directly access the information I really wanted to know and information that was not available on the Internet, and the alumni who responded were generally cooperative, so I learned a lot. I also diligently researched companies by referring to IR materials and annual reports. Company information is updated one after another, and it is very helpful because you can consider the company's way of thinking and ultimately its compatibility with you based on the current situation and medium- to long-term goals. I also used online community services where job-hunting students gather, and sometimes practiced interviews up to three times a day.

I found the individual interview booths for online selection provided by the Career Guidance and Employment Office very convenient, as I made use of them between classes.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most interviews were conducted online. The Career Guidance and Employment Division mainly offers individual consultations online by appointment, and during these consultations, we conducted online mock interviews. I think it was a great benefit to be able to immediately use the advice I received from staff and career counselors in the online interview on the day. It was also very helpful to receive guidance on small but basic and important points such as clothing and camera angles.
I also feel that my studies at university contributed to my success.
In "Information Technology Experiment II," I found it more fun to think about "what kind of person would be happy if something like this could be realized" than to code, and created a deliverable based on the concept of "a calculator that makes you want to press the button without thinking." This is a calculator with five possible states for each button, and you don't know what the result will be until you actually press it. I independently created about 20 parts for each state, and when I explained my commitment to this during my self-introduction at the interview, I received a generally positive response.
I also gave up my long vacation and gained a lot of experience through internships and group discussions, and was able to receive a tentative job offer from my first choice, NTT Data. I have a strong desire to realize new ideas, and I like communication and making people happy, so my goal is to eventually use the knowledge I gained at university to manage a project. I also want to continue to defy the expectations of those around me in a good way, while always finding things interesting for myself.
Job hunting is a long-term battle, so there were times when it was difficult to maintain motivation. At times like that, I would have a friend who was going on to graduate school play games with me to let me relax, or check whether the time I was devoting to job hunting was reaching my goal. Unlike my fellow job-hunting peers, this person had no vested interest in me, so I was able to cooperate without hesitation. I am full of gratitude for the support I received from so many people, including this friend, which helped me achieve the best results.
I personally felt that taking action is the most important thing in job hunting. At first, I was worried about whether I should visit alumni and join the community, and I was nervous, but now I truly feel that it was good that I did it. It is also important to act quickly, so approach it with the mindset of "if in doubt, take action" and keep trying until you are satisfied with your results.
